The 11-year-old suffered critical injuries in a quad bike crash on a farm near Boomi, about 95km out of Moree, on Saturday afternoon and remained in intensive care in hospital on Monday.
The Leader understands the boy did not live at the property, but was visiting the farm with family from Moree on Saturday.
On Monday, New England Detective Acting Inspector Matt Crotty told the Leader police are still trying to piece together what happened at the farm near Boomi.

It's understood police have been told the child was riding the all-terrain vehicle with other children, prior to the rollover about lunchtime.
When the boy disappeared, his family started searching for him.
"About 2pm, the family of the victim became concerned for his welfare and his whereabouts," Detective Crotty said.
"They searched the area, and found the quad bike had rolled a short distance from the house."
The boy was pinned under the quad bike and emergency services were alerted with police and ambulance paramedics rushing to the scene.
They performed CPR on the boy in a bid to help him while they waited for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter which was tasked to the farm.
The doctor and paramedic on board assessed the patient before he was flown to Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane in a critical condition.
He remained there in the intensive care unit on Monday, fighting for his life.
Detective Crotty said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, including reports the child had been riding the quad with other children prior to the accident.
"Police set-up a crime scene and detectives attended the location," Detective Crotty said.
"The quad bike has also been seized for mechanical examination.
"Police are continuing investigations into the incident."
