A MAN is behind bars accused of a wild high-speed police pursuit before he crashed north of Tamworth.
The 22-year-old was eventually arrested on Saturday morning near Bendemeer after he crashed a stolen car from Sydney.
Police spotted the Kia Cerato hatchback speeding on the New England Highway at Timbumburi on Saturday morning.
He was allegedly intercepted by officers at 128km per hour about 11.20am.
When police tried to pull him over, he fled. Officers gave chase into Tamworth, but called it off when the vehicle hit speeds of 190km an hour in a 100 zone in South Tamworth.
Police then spotted the hatchback not long after on the New England Highway, north of Bendemeer.
The hatchback lost control, left the roadway and hit a ditch.
Police will allege the driver, a 22-year-old man, fled the car on foot but was arrested soon after.
Police checks on the hatchback revealed it was reported stolen from the Blacktown area last week.
The 22-year-old was taken to Armidale police station for questioning.
He was later charged with exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h; driving while disqualified; police pursuit; and dangerous driving.
He was denied bail and has been ordered to appear in Armidale Local Court at a later date.
