The former Tamworth council general manager (GM), and current serving councillor, was appointed the interim GM of Upper Hunter after a council meeting on Monday afternoon.
Mr Inglis will manage the council from Wednesday for up to four months as it searches for a permanent replacement to Steve McDonald, who resigned in July.
Upper Hunter council said Mr Inglis' appointment was finalised on Monday, after earlier discussions last week.
