There was also a run of 40-plus degree days which brought the hottest December day on record.
More heat is on the way for the region, with weather bureaus forecasting top temperatures to hover in the high-30s and low 40s for the next week.
While the heat might be on the climb, there was some small comfort in air quality levels returning to a less hazardous level in recent days.
Tamworth Regional Council has also decided to keep Scully pool open through the holiday period.
The council had to adjust its drought management plan to open the pool which usually shuts under level five water restrictions.
The increased levels of smoke around the region have also caused some closures during the swim season.
However, pool staff have decided to keep the pool open no matter the conditions this summer.
Signage will be posted advising people they are swimming at own risk and need to keep their own health in mind when deciding to swim.
A full list of opening times can be found online.
