The two women were wed in front of about 60 guests after receiving a wedding package offered to celebrate the legislation of same-sex marriage in Australia.
The Kirkmanns will have a delayed honeymoon – but one worth waiting for, as it will include a Pink concert five years to the day after the superstar proposed for Shirley at a show.
Pink’s music and the couple’s many “geeky” interests played a big role in the nuptials at Pavillion Function Centre and Gardens.
The cake, table centrepieces and other decorations had references to Star Wars, Deadpool, Doctor Who, Lego, Guardians of the Galaxy and Batman.
They walked towards each other to Pink song F*ckin’ Perfect – Courtney with her dad and Shirley with her eldest son.
Their four-year-old son Jack also escorted them.
Shirley said that moment had been unforgettable.
“I didn’t see anything else once I clapped eyes on Courtney,” she said.
“She just looked so beautiful.
“I was told afterwards there were people crying, and I said, ‘Oh, really?’”
Shirley, who has a back injury, said she was able to stay off her crutches for the ceremony – “That was important for me, and my doctor and I had worked out a plan for how I could manage that” – but needed her wheelchair for the reception.
Their honeymoon will unfortunately be delayed until after some more surgery, but Shirley said getting to include another Pink concert in their love story was “amazing”.
Special moments
Among the special moments was having their grandparents there and, that night, a guest live-streaming to the Kirkmanns’ friends in America, Canada, Austria, England and Ireland while she read from a card they’d sent.
Shirley said the couple felt grateful and lucky that the law had been updated and that they’d been the recipients of the generous package.
“Being that it was something that we didn’t really think would ever be able to actually happen … it means just so much for us to actually be able to be married in front of everybody,” she said.
“It was perfect, absolutely perfect.”
Courtney said she was “just really happy and sort of relieved that it’s finally happened”.
Among the vendors who gave their time or goods to help stage the wedding was Bec Wherritt from Tamworth Event Planners – Wedding Angels.
“We thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Shirley and Courtney to bring their wedding ceremony vision to life – such a down-to-earth couple that are super in love,” she said.
“We love the quirky touches they added to their big day to make it so individual.
“We wish them a lifetime of love, laughter and happiness.”
Eliza Fagan of florist Designer Bunches said it was “great to be part of their day”.
“They had a vision for what they wanted but were very relaxed about it. It was great to see everything come together.”
Katie Player of Love Story Photography said: “The day was nothing short of perfect”.
“Hearing their story and watching them finally be able to legally marry was as beautiful as I imagined.”
Ceremonies by Donna celebrant Donna Pollock said: “Both Shirley and Courtney looked stunning; it was a beautiful afternoon.”
The other vendors who contributed to the package were The Pavillion, Beautifully Bronzed and VIP Nails & Beauty.
