“A wonderful opportunity to support the long-awaited change in legislation.”
These are some of the comments from five vendors in Tamworth who are offering a $4000-plus wedding to a same-sex couple from somewhere in the region.
Thrilled with the change in Australian marriage law, they will provide the venue, the ceremony, the photos, the flowers and the decor hire.
There is just one catch: the wedding must be held on May 18, the date all five have all been able to save in their busy peak-wedding-season diaries.
The recipients of the ceremony package will be announced on Valentine’s Day.
Love Story Photography’s Katie Player and Ceremonies by Donna celebrant Donna Pollock teamed up a couple of months ago on the idea, and enlisted Designer Bunches, The Pavillion Function Centre and Tamworth Event Planners – Wedding Angels.
Mrs Player said she’d been a longtime supporter of marriage equality and had been looking forward to giving away a wedding shoot as soon as the law changed.
“I always had in the back of my mind that if this was to happen, this is the way I’d want to celebrate,” she said.
“I’m doing this to be a part of something special; to celebrate a love story; to give a couple something they may have dreamed about for a long time.”
Mrs Pollock said she hoped the lucky couple had “a perfect day finally celebrating their legal commitment to one another”.
“I'm so happy that everyone now has the opportunity to marry the person they love, and I can’t wait to solemnise lots of same-sex marriages in the future.”
Bec Wherritt said Wedding Angels were “so excited to be apart of this special giveaway”.
“It’s such a honour to be working alongside these amazing suppliers to do something so special for a deserving couple. We can't wait,” she said.
Matt Steel of the Pavillion said the venue was taking part “as a way to break the ice for same-sex couples looking to get married in our region”.
“On the day itself we would expect the same as every other wedding we host; family, laughter, love and memories,” he said.
Designer Bunches’ Eliza Fagan said the law change was not before time, and she was keen to help a couple have a memorable day.
“We hope the lucky couple have an awesome, fun-filled day they can share with friends and relatives,” she said.
