Aunty Yvonne, a proud Gomeroi woman, has dedicated her life to serving her community on issues of social justice, health, education and reconciliation.
She’s been involved in innumerable consultative groups and processes, and is often the elder generously offering a Welcome to Country at events large and small across the area.
After she received her honour on International Women’s Day in March this year, Mrs Kent said there was power in being a female elder, indigenous or not.
“You’re never too old to get out there and achieve what you want to do,” she said.
“At any age, you can achieve what you want.”
Among her many, many achievements – stories on some of which we’ve dug out of the archives (in gallery, above) – Mrs Kent is the Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council deputy chairwoman, a Tamworth Family Support Services committee member, and is an active volunteer at the Coledale Community Centre.
