Police discovered the vacant Matheson Street home ablaze at about 4.20am during a patrol on Friday morning.
Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW arrived shortly afterwards.
Three crews, from the Tamworth and South Tamworth Fire Stations, wearing breathing apparatus, surrounded the house and established that no-one was home.
Firefighters then spent two hours battling the blaze before it was doused about two hours later.
A spokesperson for NSW Police said the home was completely destroyed.
Police established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire, the spokesperson said.
