In a statement, NIAS said it had been monitoring COVID-19 cases "in our region, including the new cases announced today [Thursday] in both Tamworth and Gunnedah".
"Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 being present in the area, and not knowing how it will evolve over the next week, we feel we are unable to continue with the NIAS awards evening, as many families travel from right across our region to attend," the youth sports academy said.

It said it would "remain vigilant towards the health and safety of all NIAS athletes, parents, sponsors and stakeholders ... [we] feel it is the right decision to cancel the face-to-face event".
The awards night had been scheduled for October 23.
"We thank you considerably for your support of the Academy in what has been a very tough year (18 months) for all!" NIAS said. An online awards event will now be staged.
