The 15-year-old boy has been ordered into juvenile detention after he was refused bail by magistrate Julie Soars on Monday in Tamworth Children's Court.
Police allege the teenager was one of three involved in a break-in at a unit in Denison Street about 1.30am on Monday.
A 66-year-old man in the unit woke to find an intruder fleeing through the front door. When he went outside, he told police he saw three males including one armed with a baseball bat.

The trio stole a Suzuki Swift parked in the driveway, as well as a woman's handbag, wallet and phone.
Police were alerted and started patrols for the stolen car before it was spotted on Bourne Street about 2.30am.
Officers claim the driver failed to stop and a chase was initiated. It was later called off because of safety concerns.
Police said the car was then spotted about 30 minutes later on Kirkham Crescent in Oxley Vale before it sped off.
Police said they chased the Swift before it struck a curb and crashed on Roderick Street in the CBD.
The driver was arrested after trying to flee the car.
The 15-year-old is facing charges of stealing a car; aggravated break and enter dwelling in company and steal; custody of a knife; and two counts of police pursuit.
He did not enter pleas in court on Monday and his application for bail was denied. Ms Soars ordered a specialist report from Juvenile Justice before the case returns to court later this month.
Investigations into the break-in and the theft continue, police have confirmed.
