The road is closed between Brisbane and Bourke streets as crews work to remove the fallen tree.
It's not clear at this stage what caused the tree to fall, but it has ripped up a significant area of grass on the verge around it.
The tree looks to be healthy, a Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) spokeswoman said.
"A wet base following the recent rainfall may have contributed to its instability," she said.
"Council is currently working to remove the fallen tree.
"Council is working to clean up the footpath and road by this afternoon so they can reopen to the public."
