The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned of severe thunderstorms across the region on Monday afternoon followed by days of wet weather.
Residents should prepare for the possibility of large hail and damaging winds, BOM meteorologist Helen Reid said.
"We have a trough over the western-inland that's bringing hot and humid air into the state, that helps thunderstorms to develop," she said.
"We do need to be careful of that today because there is the potential for any of the storms this afternoon to have large hail and damaging winds."
Temperatures are expected to remain warm across the next couple of days, around 29 to 30 degrees.
At least 15mm of rain is expected in Tamworth on Monday with the same levels likely throughout the week.

It comes not long after the city was lashed with hail and heavy rain that brought flash floods to parts of the town.
Power was cut to thousands of homes and local SES teams were run off their feet dealing with call outs to anything from fallen trees to trampolines gone wild, superintendent Mitchell Parker said.
"We're working closely with the BOM, we have a number of rescue crews ready and available to attend requests for assistance and we have a good relationship with Fire and Rescue NSW and the RFS who are willing to lend a hand," he said.
"We're reminding people to secure or tie down any loose items that could be sent flying - and just to maintain their gutters free of debris to allow water to flow freely.
"According to the BOM we are in the centre of the severe activity - so we're ready to respond to jobs."
A 43 kilometre wind gust was recorded at 1:30pm at Narrabri.
