So, how it can it be that different?

Well, there was one little thing she didn't do last year.

"Train," the youngster laughed.

Deasey had a good excuse, though.

She'd just returned from a knee injury when the championships rolled around.

"I'd qualified so I just thought I'd go," Deasey said.

Her results in 2019 were "not good" but fast forward 12 months and the Tamworth High student has put in a solid preparation.

Deasey's latest hit-out came on the weekend at Kootingal where she recorded personal bests in both events - 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke - she will compete in at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

"I'm feeling better than last year - a bit more prepared," Deasey said.

"This year I've had a few good carnivals leading up, trained all winter so I feel a bit better.

"I did a PB today [Sunday] which I haven't done in a very long time.

"I'm probably not aiming for placings or top 10 or anything but just to get some good times again. I think I should do some PBs - hopefully."

Further helping Deasey is her previous experiences at state age.

The 16-year-old's been competing at the championships for about three years and has gotten used to transitioning from the smaller rural carnivals to the big stage.

"I think because I've been there a few years, it's not as daunting. I remember the first time, I was so scared," Deasey said.

Deasey will be the sole representative from the Kootingal-Moonbi Swimming Club where she has honed her craft under the tutelage of coach Graham Johnstone.

It's a club that Deasey loves being a part of.

"It's very family friendly, there's lots of little kids and everyone helps them out," Deasey said.

"All the parents get behind every kid. Even if they don't know who you are - they'll cheer you on. You just know every parent will be there for you."

Swimmers from Tamworth City Swimming Club and 360 Scully Park Swimming Club will also compete at the championships.
