The Manilla local and her husband Harry are hosting a 'Biggest Morning Tea' to raise money for the Cancer Council.

But the catch is, gatherings can't be very big at all this year as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Mrs Fletcher came up with the idea to send out invitations asking people to sit down at 10am on May 28, have a mug of something at home, and make a small donation to the Cancer Council.

"It was a bit of a challenge and we thought we could do something a bit different this year, because you can't actually host a morning tea," she said.

"At the end of the day, it's the Cancer Council that's going to win.

"Over the years we've had family members that have been diagnosed and unfortunately we've lost some family members and in the middle of all this fundraising, Harry has been diagnosed with cancer as well so that's just made it all the more important for us to raise some much-needed funds."

The couple have raised more than $45,000 for the Cancer Council over the past 12 years or so, but this will be their first time hosting the morning tea event.

"You've just got to think out of the square, and I'm hoping lots of different communities will come on board," Mrs Fletcher said.

"Every dollar counts, so whatever we get, it's all a bonus."

The community uptake has been promising, and the local branch's community relations officer Kate Dubois said supporters have been coming up with different ways to host a Biggest Morning Tea in the time of coronavirus.

"It's a whole new opportunity and a whole new world for people to experiment with ideas," she said.

The cancellation of major annual events like Relay for Life mean the morning tea income is even more important this year.

"We're trying to maintain all of our services to all of our cancer patients and to be able to do that we need to be able to keep funding them," Ms Dubois said.
