Benjamin Mackay, 27, has been charged with stealing, possess prohibited drug, hinder police, resist arrest and assault police occasioning actual bodily harm.
Officers stopped the Tingha man in Inverell at about 8pm on Friday after an earlier incident where two Bluetooth speakers were stolen from a local shop.
It's alleged the man was searched by police and found with a small amount of cannabis that he then attempted to get rid of.
The man then allegedly resisted arrest and headbutted the police officer who suffered bruises to his forehead and cuts to his cheek and chin.

The injured police officer was seen by NSW Ambulance paramedics and is in recovery.
The 27-year-old was refused bail in Inverell Court on Saturday and will front court in Moree on Monday.
