The second ever life member, Ms Smith started working with the University of the Third Age in 2008.
Ten years on, she has made the decision to let someone else take the reigns.
“She’s just been there with the furniture,” Tamworth U3A president John Sharkey said.
“Wendy was appointed program coordinator in June 2008 and ever since then she’s been doing the program.
“After ten years someone like her deserved an award.”
The U3A provides educational opportunities to vintage community members looking to continue learning in their retirement.
Members will study anything from history to computers, Shakespeare, cards and current affairs.
A former school teacher, Ms Smith was integral in finding new, interesting subjects to keep members entertained.
“She comes up with some great ideas and suggestions,” Mr Sharkey said.
“After ten years that’s a magnificent feat and because of her service we appointed her a life members – she’s our second life member ever.”
