THE main concern flowing from this weekend’s revamped Fiesta La Peel was the street party ending all too soon.

The community let their feet do the voting on this year’s multicultural street festival as organisers estimated more 20,000 people strolled through Fitzroy Street on Saturday.
While the feedback registered to date has largely been positive, some still think more room, and time, is needed to accommodate the popular event.

Councillors on the city centre working group suggested some changes might be necessary, including Mark Rodda who said the event was “quite crowded”.
“Not that it’s a bad thing,” he said.
“It might need to spill over more into Bicentennial Park or utilise a bit more of Kable Avenue.
“It was an excellent event and it’s getting more and more popular which is a credit to the community who are so keen and willing to come out to support our ethnic communities.”
Deputy mayor Phil Betts said it highlighted what could be achieved with the relatively new Fitzroy Street space.
But he said people told him they’d like to see the event run for a longer time during the day.
“One of the other things was the time frame,” he said.
“The food cues were there basically from start-to-finish.
While he said everyone got “sufficient food”, Cr Betts said it was something for the committee to consider.
Event organiser Carol Hughes said the extra space on Fitzroy Street was widely welcomed and this year’s Fiesta La Peel format was the best, by far.
