
Interesting side note that the recent Liberal spill in Canberra didn’t rely on first past the post but on eliminating the lowest scoring candidate then voting again to determine the successful candidate.
It was good enough to elect our Prime Minister, but obviously not good enough for Mr Anderson. (NDL September 23, Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson calls for first past the post vote in NSW)
As this system is impractical with a large number of candidates, the use of optional preferential voting is the best way of the electorate getting the representatives elected who most closely match their wishes.
