“It was a good way to kick off our season,” the skipper said.
After restricting RSL to 9-188 from their 45 overs, Civeo had a bit of a late wobble but Blake Jarrett and Les Bonney (both 4no) finished off the job Cameron (119) and Sam Bullen (26) had started with a 113-run opening wicket stand.
“Sam Bullen was a bit of an unlikely hero. He opened the batting with me because he had to go to an engagement party,” Cameron said.
As it was he ended up batting for 17 overs and getting to the party late, but he was part of his first 100-run partnership.
“I thought from there we’d win the game,” Cameron said.
They probably made it “a bit uglier” than they needed to, with Jake Thurston (14) batting at eight the only other batsmen to make double figures. Cameron was disappointed to get out when he did – they only needed 22 – but conceded he was a bit fatigued.
Skipper Mick Dowdell (3-23) topped the wickets for RSL after hitting 27 in a late cameo. Opener Andy Irvine was their top-scorer with 75 and shared a 63 run partnership with Hamish Duncan (23) at the top of the order.
Jordan Mowle (4-23) was the main destroyer and bowled a particularly good second spell.
“He picked up a couple of big wickets in his second spell,” Cameron said.
He was overall pretty happy with his sides bowling performance.
“I was hoping to restrict them to anything under 200. There’s a couple of guys in their side that 200 can turn into 300,” he said.
In the other game Crossroads’ 138 proved enough for the defending champions to beat grand final combatants Tatts. Chris Sargent was the shining light for Crossroads with the bat with 53, extras also contributing a valuable 33 to their total.
Tatts captain Tom Craig (4-17) and Chris Higgins (3-31) did the bulk of the damage with the ball, the skipper then playing a virtually lone hand with 41 as they were rolled for 99.
