Tamworth High School student Jessica Taggart was nominated for the award after winning the NSW School-based Trainee of the Year in August, and prior to that, the same award at the regional level.
She is among eight finalists in the running for the national title.
Miss Taggart studies a certificate III in health services assistance through the TAFE New England Institute and works at Tamworth hospital as a nurse as part of her traineeship.
She juggles her studies through TAFE with not only her school work, but her duties as a school leader and student representative, as well as sporting commitments.
Miss Taggart hopes to go on to university to become a registered nurse once she finishes her traineeship.
Senator for NSW Doug Cameron said Jessica had already shown “outstanding excellence”.
“Jessica should be proud of her achievements and her contribution to the nation’s skills base,” Senator Cameron said.
