It's been a few years since Tamworth celebrated Youth Week properly, but with events up-and-running again, this year will be one to remember, according to council's team leader inclusive community Katey Allwell.

"Each year our Youth Council is funded to run a series of events throughout the region, and they're very much in control of every facet of those events," she said.

This year's main focus is inclusion, reflected in two of the main events - an accessible sports day with a shuttle service offered from Barraba, Manilla and the Youthie, and a cultural celebrations day featuring art, dance and food.

The accessible sports day is being led by youth councillor Isla Farr, while youth councillor Lachlan Power is the brainpower behind the cultural celebration.

"They just wanted to provide opportunities for young people to come together based on different interests, share each other's company and become more social now that we can after COVID," Ms Allwell said.

"In amongst that we've got some art workshops happening around the region to bring young people from regional areas together."

Running from April 4 to 14, Youth Week is targeted at young people between the ages of 12 to 24 years, who are being encouraged to come along and participate.

"It's very much an extension on the last couple of years because we've had restrictions due to COVID, and have had to move Youth Week online in recent years," Ms Allwell said.

"So this is our first Youth Week where we're actually able to bring young people together to connect again."

Council has just gone through the process of repositioning the Youth Council, giving it a stronger seat at the decision making table.

"They've recently been consulted on a range of different projects council is working on, including council's visitor economy plan," Ms Allwell said.

"They've put in a lot of effort, we've got 20 incredible young people as part of this youth council and they really have put in a lot of work to deliver these events, so it would be really great to see other young people come out to support it."

The events reflect issues on the Youth Council's priority list including mental health, inclusivity and celebrating Indigenous culture.
