Tamworth weather: rain forecast to ease later this week as Peel and Namoi rivers are on flood watch

Wet weather is expected to hang around for a couple more days yet.

THE RAIN settled in over the weekend and won't go away for a few more days yet, causing authorities to keep a close eye on the region's rivers.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) airport weather station rain gauge clocked close to 30mm of the wet stuff from Sunday morning to Monday morning.

Locals reported various totals in backyard gauges, with about 20mm notched in North Tamworth and 40mm in the Westdale area.

The weather was gloomy last week and across the weekend as well, soaking already full catchments.

The BoM has predicted the grey skies to hang around over Tamworth until at least mid-week, before the chance of rain drops from Thursday.

The BoM has issued a flood watch for the Peel River in Tamworth and the Namoi River in Gunnedah, meaning minor flooding may be possible.

People living or working along rivers and streams should monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground, should flooding develop.

The alert will be escalated to an official flood warning if the minor flood level is expected to be exceeded in those areas.
