Police have combed the crime scene in David Street in Ashford, north of Inverell, after the break-and-enter, and have now gone public with an appeal for help.
Rural crime detectives have taken over the investigation after the thieves forced entry to a gun safe inside and made off with two rifles.
Police said a .22 calibre Marlin bolt-action rifle, bearing a serial number 12658701, was stolen; as well as a 22-250 calibre Howa action rifle. It had a B461778 serial number on it.
