TAMWORTH Regional Council has been out for blood by taking part in a national donation challenge between councils from all across Australia, and the city has come out almost on top.

The local council team - made up of staff and community members - saved more than 1000 lives during the three months of the Red Cross Lifeblood competition.
Tamworth council placed second out of all the participating local government teams across the nation, and came out on top for plasma donations.

Council's team saved more than 1100 lives and made a total of 398 donations, of which 361 were plasma.
"I think it's a tremendous effort ... full marks to staff and friends of council," Cr Murray said.
He said it shows how regional towns pull together for the community.
"Tamworth has been well known as a strong social responsibility area," he said.
"I think this is a great service ... they need [donations] all day every day, not just for the three months of the challenge but all year round."
Although vying for first place next year, Cr Murray said he counted saving more than 1100 lives with 398 donations as a big win.
