The 14-year-old Tamworth High School student had been in Newcastle getting treatment for leukemia, after being diagnosed in November.
Lachy's dad Michael said coming home was a positive step forward but there was still a long road ahead, with another 18 months of treatment on the cards.

"It was very weird, coming home and trying to adapt to a different life - the same life, but different with what we've been through," he said.
Michael said his son was brave through the nine months of chemotherapy, and an "inspiration".
"You take for granted so much stuff and then something like this comes and gives you a smack in the face," he said.

Despite COVID-19 restrictions, Lachy's schoolmates and peers couldn't let the occasion slip by.
Tamworth High School students will host a fundraiser on Friday for Lachy's family.
Michael said knowing his son had the support of his school was "overwhelming", and any funds raised would help out.
There'll be homemade orange masks, cupcakes up for grabs and the big event of the day - a students versus teachers 'beep test'.
The school has filmed a special song and the students recorded some personal video messages to send to Lachy as well, to welcome him home.
