The 32-year-old man from Yetman died after his Toyota Landcruiser slammed head-on into an oncoming Landcruiser, and crashed down an embankment off the Ashford Road at Wandera.
Police believe the Yetman man crossed to the wrong side of the road, causing the crash, just after 3.30pm.
Now, detectives are trying to find out what caused him to lose control in the first place, and whether a phone, speed, or drug or alcohol might have contributed.

"Initial inquiries suggest the deceased driver crossed to the incorrect side of the road and collided head-on with the oncoming vehicle," New England Detective Chief Inspector Roger Best told the Leader.
"Police are investigating all factors that may have contributed to the collision."
The man, who was the sole occupant in the Landcruiser, was trapped in the vehicle but died at the scene.
"Luckily, the driver and the two occupants in the second vehicle were not seriously injured," Detective Best said.
One passenger, a 42-year-old woman, suffered a dislocated shoulder in the crash, while a 13-year-old suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to hospital in a stable condition.
The 49-year-old man behind the wheel of the Landcruiser, which was towing a trailer, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
New England police setup a crime scene, and forensic officers and detectives have examined the site, the roadway and the wrecks, as part of their investigation.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner, who will rule on the cause of death.
