The 17-year-old was riding an unregistered motorbike along Rifle Rage Road on Saturday, when police say he lost control and was thrown from the bike.
He was found by his friends around 2.15pm, who raced to call emergency services for help.
While ambulance and police attended the scene, crews from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were unable to land because of heavy fog and cloud cover.
Initially transported to Armidale, the young man was then airlifted to Sydney.
