But the wheels rarely fall off.
The songwriting is tight and his band's following is growing, particularly in Sydney.
The perceived looseness at his concerts defies a serious period of steady success for the former Tamworth man.

An EP-launch late last year saw Golledge pack-out the Marrickville bowlo, a buzzing alternative music venue in the capital.
"There was 400 people there which was kind of unbelievable," Golledge said.

"A lot of new faces which was great.
"Having played in Sydney for 15 years, you build a bit of a following, but to have that many people come to your show is wild."
Golledge is releasing another EP, Namoi, on February 7.
It comes after a boom year in 2019 where Golledge signed to I OH YOU records.
He also played a role - and composed the soundtrack - in the smash SBS series Robbie Hood.
There are plans for a tour in March, including a return to Tamworth, and more recording is on the cards as well.
It sounds like a hectic period, but the show-biz schedule still has a jolting feel.
"It's funny, you do a lot of things and then you sit around for ages, that's how music works," he said.
"I'm just trying to relax, drink more water and not go too crazy."
Golledge returned to Tamworth for the country music festival where there was a slew of homegrown songwriters owning the stages.
"There's a lot of people who have come from Tamworth who have made really great alternative country music," he said.
