Police are searching for the white Toyota Hilux - one of two taken in separate break and enters in Tamworth in the same night.
The residents were home in their Warrah Drive property in Calala overnight on Wednesday when they found an intruder in their house.
They confronted him after he grabbed the keys to the Hilux. He then made off in the ute.

He is described as having a skinny build, dark skin and long hair and was last seen wearing a dark baseball cap, a grey hoodie and black tracksuit pants.
Police spent the day on Thursday canvassing the Calala area for witnesses and are searching for the car, bearing number plates EAW-64L.
A white Ford Falcon sedan was stolen from a Scarborough Close home in North Tamworth in the early hours of the morning.
Thieves broke into the property and stole the keys to the car, along with personal belongings, police said.
The car was then believed to have been involved in a minor collision about 4.30am, but disappeared shortly after.
The residents woke to discover the car and goods were missing at 7.30am.
Police are searching for the Ford Falcon, bearing number plates 092-VTH, and are urging anyone who may have seen it, or the stolen Hilx to contact Tamworth on 6768 2999.
