A THIRTEEN-year-old girl will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act after a suspicious grass fire near Tamworth.

The teenage girl was arrested at the scene of the blaze in Kootingal on Wednesday night, police said.
Officers were called to property near Kootingal Public School, off Denman Avenue, about 7.10pm after reports of a small grass fire in a paddock.
Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy said the girl was detained by police and questioned.

Detective Darcy said the arrest served as a warning to others not to engage in “dangerous behaviour”.

“This was reckless behaviour; [it] could have spread and become very dangerous in a matter of minutes,” he told the Leader.
“The very dry conditions means there is a lot of fuel about and hot conditions, and the fire danger ratings has the potential for a disaster.
“This was put out quickly, but police will move quickly against anyone involved in dangerous behaviour like arson.”
