Shane Barry Olsen fronted an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Tamworth Local Court on Boxing Day on charges of malicious wounding, common assault and breach of bail.
The 45-year-old is accused of attacking a 48-year-old man about 2.30pm on Tuesday at a hostel on Johnston Street in North Tamworth.
Detectives allege Olsen got into an argument with the older man inside a room at the group home before stabbing him in the leg.
Police then claim he fled the scene.
Officers were alerted to the stabbing and arrived to find the injured man with a leg wound in the group home.
The 48-year-old was assessed at the scene by paramedics and taken by ambulance to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition.
He was treated by doctors on Christmas night and has since left hospital.
A crime scene was set-up at the home and combed by officers as part of the investigation.
Olsen, who detectives allege knew the victim, handed himself into investigators at Tamworth Police Station at about 8 o’clock on Christmas night.
He was arrested and was questioned before being charged with three offences and refused bail by police.
He’s been behind bars since.
