Chasing their northern neighbours’ 9-189 at Riverside 1, Tamworth fell just seven runs short.
Needing 28 runs and with only one wicket in hand, Van Aanholt and Scott Hobden (24no) almost pulled it off for the home side but with victory in sight van Aanholt was caught.
He really took the attack to the New England bowlers with his 55 including eight fours. Skipper and opener Chris Crowell was the other notable contributor with 27.
Taking the new ball van Aanholt earlier claimed 3-16. Opening partner Laurie Johnson also finished with three wickets.
Tamworth will be looking to bounce back on Friday night when they take on Coffs Harbour under lights.
The over 50s also played a practice match against New England as a warm-up for the players heading to the nationals over Easter.
