Firefighters rushed to respond to reports that a house on Green Street was engulfed in flames just after 9:30pm on Monday.

Five pumper trucks from both Fire and Rescue NSW stations responded to the fire, as well as the HAZMAT team and the duty commander, Superintendent Tom Cooper told the Leader.

"It was an unoccupied house," Superintendent Cooper confirmed.

"It was a derelict house and the fire is believed to be suspicious."

The energy agency was called in to cut the power off and police were also tasked to the scene of the fire.

The glow from the raging flames lit up the sky for some nearby Tamworth residents.

The fire destroyed the house and a large section of the structure towards the rear of the home collapsed, Superintendent Cooper said.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters worked hard into the night to bring the blaze under control and it was fully extinguished before the scene was handed over to Oxley police to conduct an investigation.

Superintendent Cooper said firefighters were aware of separate yard fires and grass fires in the West Tamworth area during the day on Monday, and said police were investigating.
