Tamworth Regional Council passed policy changes on Tuesday that allow recycling bins to be taken away for households who can't do the right thing.
Mayor Col Murray said something needed to happen, because the poor management of recycling by a few was impacting the cost of waste services for everyone.
"If you get a couple of bins really badly contaminated, that can disqualify a whole load of recyclables and condemn it to being buried in landfill," he said.
