Fire and Rescue NSW dispatched three crews to the Thompson Crescent dwelling at about 6pm after reports the house was ablaze.
Inspector Adam Wixx said the fire had started at the rear of the building and spread throughout the building, including into the roof void.
Two teams entered the building and cleared it before moving to control the spread of the blaze. The home proved vacant.
Wearing breathing apparatus, the crews were able to extinguish the first within about half an hour.
Firefighters remained on scene for salvage and overhaul for several more hours before handing over the scene to NSW Police, who will now conduct an investigation of the causes of the fire.
Inspector Wixx said the structure had sustained significant damage to several rooms.
He encouraged locals to be cautious around electric blankets and heaters, to develop an evacuation plan, and to approach their local Fire and Rescue station for a safety visit.
The cause of the Thompson Crescent blaze is currently under investigation.
Two teams from Tamworth Station 452 and a third from South Tamworth Station 448 were aided by NSW Ambulance and NSW police.
