The start of works on stage one of the $1.4 million project will commence from May 31 with the start of construction of kerbing, according to Tamworth Regional Council.
The upgrade to the Calala Lane intersection as a roudnabout has become controversial among some Calala residents, who believe traffic lights would be a safer option for the intersection.
Brad Welsh, who has led much of the opposition, told the Leader the campaign against the road upgrade will not come to an end, and that he had taken concerns to state Ministers and MPs.
A spokesperson for Tamworth Regional Council said the completion date for the project has been pushed back from what was an August deadline.

"The original August completion date has been updated to late September in accordance with the updated construction program," he said.
"As with all civil infrastructure projects this is subject to change due to many variables, including the weather."
The spokesperson said the decision to build the intersection as a single-lane roundabout was based on "computer-aided design modelling in accordance with current relevant design standards, with consideration to cyclists and pedestrians as well as adjacent properties."
"Traffic and pedestrian volumes both now and using a conservative estimate of future growth do not meet the minimum requirements set by Transport for NSW for a signalised intersection to be considered at this location," he said.
Two lanes of traffic will remain open on Calala Lane under traffic control while construction takes place.
Campbell Road will lose one lane to closure during construction, and will be under traffic control.
Motorists will still be entitled to enter Campbell Road from Calala Lane, but will not be able to get back on the main road directly.
Exit from Campbell Road onto Calala Lane will be done via detours.
A spokesperson for Tamworth council asked motorists to travel with care and to allow extra travel time.
