At around 5.10am this morning, the 19-year-old man allegedly broke into a home and stole a Holden Cruz in Werris Creek.
He jumped in and began driving the stolen car towards Tamworth and police followed, initiating a pursuit.
Oxley Police District Inspector Michael Moy said due to the nature of his driving, the chase had to be called off.
The Werris Creek man kept driving towards Tamworth, and the pursuit commenced again at around 6.15am just outside of the city limits.
