Homeowners have been notified by mail that the flare will be fired several times while an intelligent device called a pig analyses the inside wall of the pipeline.
An APA spokesman said the maintenance is an essential part of ensuring the integrity of the pipeline.
"This operation includes the need to flare some natural gas from the pipeline to ensure the correct operation of the inspection tool," he said.

"Flaring is a safe procedure that removes excess gas from the pipeline.
"Flaring locations have been carefully selected and assessed to minimise risks including excessive noise, public nuisance and secondary fires."
There are expected to be several flarings over the coming weeks and APA has been in contact with emergency services and landholders to warn them about the tests.
The 294 kilometre central ranges pipeline runs between Dubbo and Tamworth.
The flares will initially be located on Crown Land at Tamerang, approximately 30 kilometres from Coolah.
