Firies were called to the fire at a small weatherboard property on Lawson Avenue, at about 2pm, where they discovered the house completely alight.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Gunnedah and Boggabri and Gunnedah RFS were on scene, as well as police and ambulance crews.
Firefighter Andrew Johns said there was a lot of smoke as they arrived.
"We had crews in offensive mode from the start ... to get in there safely and we cut the power off and got to work to put the fire out but the house was extensively damaged," he said.
"Nobody was injured."
He also said a neighbour "abused" the firies when they arrived "for taking too long".
"We were here within seven minutes so time does tend to pass really quick in a stressful situation but we were here," Mr Johns said.
"I'll say to anyone that wants to abuse Fire and Rescue just to be a bit more patient."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
