"As soon as I got the horse, I knew he was more of a longer distance horse," Woodward said.
Up until Tuesday, the gelding - formerly trained by Greg Eurell and Archie Alexander before that - had only raced between 1100m and 1400m.
But, the way Tom's Knight had been finishing of late, gave Woodward the confidence to step the four-year-old up in distance.
And it paid off as Tom's Knight saluted at Tamworth in the Cool Blue Ice BM66 Handicap over 2100m on Tuesday.

Tom's Knight drove to the front from barrier 10 under the guidance of Belinda Hodder.
Once they found the front - and the fence - the pair never gave it up to score a win over Jane Clement's Kacper Boy two lengths back in second.
While the step up paid off, the plan wasn't always to take such a big jump up in distance.
"I'd rather it only have been 1800m first but there wasn't much around so we went here," Woodward said of the 2100m race at Tamworth.
Woodward said Hodder rode the gelding "beautifully" and made note of the brilliant work foreman Jono Byrne had done.
Woodward didn't have another target in mind just yet but said the gelding came out of the race in good nick.
"We'll just have to wait and see," Woodward said of Tom's Knight's next race.
"We'll probably give him a fortnight to three weeks but he's pulled up good."
