First came the words of encouragement: “Don’t be too hard on yourself – you’re playing a much more experienced side.”
Then came the rev-up: “You can do much better – you’re making too many fundamental errors.”
Group 4 women’s coach Adelaide Monika used words to that effect when addressing her charges following their opening match of the Greater Northern Tigers Championships at Scully Park on Saturday.
It was the first time women’s tackle had been played at the championships, with Group 4 fielding a very inexperienced side.
On Saturday, Group 21 beat them 16-0 and then Group 19 downed them 22-0, after leading 18-0 at halftime.
Speaking following the Group 21 clash, Monika said: “A lot of these girls have never played league, and now they’ve gone from club football straight into a representative side … So their expectations for themselves was too high.”
Zoe Darlington (Barraba), Joan O’Leary and Toni Skuthorpe (Robins) and Lauren Clarke (Boggabri) were named in the Tigers’ squad, who play North Coast at Coffs Harbour in March.
