Mitchell Henderson’s dream of playing NRL has moved sharper into focus, after his selection in the Newcastle Knights’ Harold Matthews Cup side.
And on Saturday afternoon, at the famed Belmore Sports Ground, the Year 10 Farrer student will start at five-eighth for the Knights against Canterbury, in round one of the annual under-16 competition.
The clash follows Henderson being put through about three months of training and pre-season games at the Knights, after the club identified him as a top talent last year.
“I’m pretty nervous, pretty keen,” Henderson said of the Bulldogs clash.
“It’s been a long wait for this. We’ve been doing pre-season for about 12 weeks now. So it’s good to finally get a round this weekend.”
The Tamworth 15-year-old said his immediate goal was to continually improve and to cement a spot in the side, with his long-term goal securing an NRL contract.
“That’s [the NRL] a long way down the road, though … But that’s the final result that I’d like,” he said.
