Surrounded by a sea of capes, wigs and tutus, the Inverell Kestrels junior and senior teams rose to the top in a superhero-themed touch gala at Warialda on Saturday.

Created by 13-year-old Sophie Hall in memory of Delungra four-year-old Logan Taylor, who lost his battle with brain cancer last year; the twilight carnival raised around $1700 for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
“(Sophie) she was so overwhelmed with the support that everyone in Warialda gives for this day,” mum Teresa Hall said.
“She’s very grateful for everybody that takes part.”
Logan’s parents Sarah and Rob Taylor spoke on how honoured they were to see the event carry their son’s name and memory.

The local teams took on six junior and five senior rivals in a series of 14 minute games. Most took to the field in eccentric outfits, adding to the enthusiastic atmosphere.
The juniors kept the audience on the edge of their seats in their grand final game against Warialda’s S&M Egan Plumbing team. Evenly matched, a 1-1 score at full time resulted in a drop off. Finally, with five players on each side, Inverell secured their win with a try.
“It was very stressful for some of the parents on the sideline!” Teresa said.
The senior team was just as exciting to watch as the Kestrels took on Warialda’s Wazza Warriors. Fast paced, the game showed off both team’s skills as they attempted to outrun one another. By half time neither had the upper hand, with the score still at 0-0.
“It was very close. Inverell didn’t score until the very last few minutes of the game,” Teresa said.
The superhero and villains game kept spectators entertained. Despite the darker side willing to skirt a few rules in the hope of winning – ending up with eight players on the field at one stage – the game was a draw.
Sole superhero scorer Wyatt Laidlaw was awarded the sportsmanship award for his efforts. “It was very entertaining, some terrible skills shown,” laughed Teresa.
We Can’t Agree impressed costume competition judges Sarah and Rob with their superman outfits, complete with red tutus and Ronald McDonald House socks.
Mason Nieddu won the throwing competition with six successful throws in a row. In the racing competition, Tom Bell was named fastest junior boy and Bri Wineti fastest junior girl, while Hunter Brown and Lilliana Reardon took home the senior awards.
The Inverell Junior Kestrels topped the podium once again as the fastest junior relay team, along with senior winners Logie Bear.
“I’d like to thank everybody for helping us out,” Teresa said.
