Up against eight other teams representing some of the best talent in the state, the local girls proved too strong on day one at Tamworth’s Scully Pool, claiming a 13-0 win over Sydney South West in their opening match.
The strong first outing was closely followed up with an impressive 5-2 win over South Coast.
North West sports co-ordination officer Richard Rowlings said day one was full of “fantastic water polo”.
“North West have got off to a flying start,” Rowlings said.
“They claimed two wins from two earlier today [Monday], but I think the competition will get tougher for them as the week progresses.”
“I think they will have to stand up a bit more, but I think it will be very interesting to see how they go.”

North West’s biggest test will come on Tuesday, as the side does battle with competition heavyweights Hunter.
“I’d say most teams will have a bit of a blend in terms of girls that have experience playing water polo every week and those just starting out,” Rowlings said.
“From what I understand, teams such as Hunter and Sydney North tend to be pretty strong given they have got a few players who play the sport regularly.
“However, I think North West have the core of a good side and hopefully can go quite deep into the competition. I certainly think they could be in contention for the semi-finals for sure.”
Day two’s action will take a brief shift away from the competition for the players to focus on raising awareness for a good cause.
“The girls will be doing some fun things to raise awareness for breast cancer,” Rowlings said.
“There’s a breast cancer race the girls will be getting involved in and it should really be a lot of fun.”
Rowlings said the competition was shaping up to be “very strong”.
“Even after day one, I think the competition has been very good,” he said.
“There’s certainly some strong teams taking part this year and who knows it could be one of the strongest we’ve had.
“Hopefully there will be a lot more exciting games to come over the next three days.”
