Almost 3000 head of cattle were up for bids with poddy calves having a strong representation.
Gunnedah stock agent Guy Gallen said feed constraints had led to the influx.
“It was pretty sad to see so many cows and calves get sold off,” Mr Gallen said.
“The cows are losing weight due to the lack of feed in the region and in turn that is leading to producers making the tough call to sell their young stock.”
Recent rain however has lifted the hopes of local producers with most of the shire receiving welcome spring rain.
“We had an inch of rain in Gunnedah during the sale,” Mr Gallen said.
“That is really pleasing and if we do get some follow up rain in the short term coupled with some warm weather, the cattle will see some feed on the ground in the next couple of weeks.”
“The rain came from the south east which is unusual, but the 1982 drought was broken by rain from the south east so hopefully that is an omen.”

Mr Gallen said the recent rain had left him optimistic.
“I am actually pretty pumped about it,” Mr Gallen said.
“To see any rain is exciting and here’s hoping it continues and we can be in a position to see out what is expected to be a hot summer.”
