The musical tells the story of Fanny Brice, one of the most celebrated entertainers of her time.
The show is Fanny’s story with some favourite musical numbers featured in the play including, I’m the Greatest Star, I Want to Be Seen with You Tonight, Don’t Rain On My Parade, People, The Music That Makes Me Dance, Who Are You Now? and You Are Woman, I Am Man.
Anne Walsh is the director of the new production and is looking forward to bringing the show to life on the Tamworth Capitol Theatre between May 11 and May 26.
She and the cast have been hard at work perfecting the musical ahead of opening night.
”We have never done this before, It’s actually a personal favourite of mine,” Mrs Walsh said.
“Now seemed to be the right time to do it, and this year is the 50th anniversary of the movie, Funny Girl, so we thought it was timely.”
Mrs Walsh said the society’s committee embraced the concept with open arms and with a stellar cast, including Natacha Curnow as Fanny Brice, it was bound to be a winner.
“Tach has played this role before,” she said.
“She is very lucky to have played it years ago, so she’s an old hand at this role.
“Obviously there’s a different director and cast members so she’s playing the role differently but she’s doing very well.”
Mrs Walsh described the production as a “good time story.”
“It’s not a made up music, it’s based on real characters,” she said.
“It is the story of her life, she knows she’s a star and needs everyone else to see that.
”People will feel entertained and have a good laugh, that’s what the show is about.”
