The Baby Faced Assassin beat replacement opponent Marcello Sina over five tough rounds at the Beachcomber Hotel in Toukley on Saturday night, in a fight the 17-year-old’s trainer, Scott Chaffey, labelled his charge’s sternest examination to date.
Sina took the place of Nathan Jones in the 58kg title contest, after Jones recently got injured fighting in Thailand.
Chaffey said the Tamworth High Year 12 student executed a fight plan centred on low leg kicks and grappling. “That being said, overall Josh boxed really strong, too,” he added.
“It was definitely his toughest opponent to date. He was 23 years old and came from a strong gym – a very traditional Thai-style gym with a Thai trainer.”
McCulloch will accompany Chaffey to Phuket, Thailand, for a two-week June training camp, where it is hoped the teen will have his first fight against a Thai. He now has 10 wins, two losses and a draw, and has won five consecutive bouts.
