The team of Justin Fox, David Roser, Travis Porter, Andrew Bowden, Lola Roser, Jenny Bowden and Tom Bowden dropped just one game at the three-day event to take out the Division One title at West Tamworth League Club.
The Tamworth side was chuffed to be able to keep one trophy in town.
“It’s good to see a local team take it out,” Fox said.
“Hopefully it will encourage some other teams to represent Tamworth next year.”
The group was thrown together late in the piece but proved they were able to match it with some of the state’s best players.
“It’s the first time this has been held in Tamworth so we decided to put together a local team,” Andrew said.
“We only got ourselves together two weeks ago,” Jenny added.
“We didn’t come in with expectations to win. We just came for a good weekend and we ended up winning it.”
While the Tamworth outfit took out Division One, it was a Sydney side that won the Premier Division.
Zelma Moran, Shane Horne, Fran Shore, Barry Plummer, Graham Parker, Warren Gibson, Jenny Duggan and Luke Hudson won the Premier Division in a playoff.
It was a thrilling way to finish the highly rated event.
“I thought it was a great tournament. Probably one of our best for a few years,” NSW Darts president Greg Clegg told Fairfax Media on Monday.
“What contributed to that was the quality of the players here but also the venue. The venue was really good. I think moving the championships to a regional area makes a big difference to expose those players across NSW to a state championship.”
Clegg also encouraged players to take part in junior darts played in Tamworth on Sunday mornings.
