Easter campers on the jam-packed shores of Chaffey Dam got a fiery-fright on the long weekend, as a blaze erupted near the lookout.

One witness said she heard fireworks let-off before a grass-fire quickly broke out and made a call to triple-zero.
“It was pretty scary, because we knew there was thousands of campers at the dam,” Sheri Ware told The Leader.

She said the recent dry conditions at the dam meant the fire too-off quickly, but campers were thankful the weekend’s winds were kept at bay during the fire.
“It was lucky the wind wasn’t blowing as hard as it was the during the day, otherwise the fire would’ve been pushed towards the campers.
She said campers and boaters moved-in to help extinguish the fire before emergency services arrived.
Mrs Ware said the emergency lasted about 45 minutes.
