Lyndsay and Val Smith have been married for 72 years but they don’t think there is anything amazing about that.
What amazes them is that their four children, Bob, Melville, Elaine and Cheryllen, are all retired.
The couple met at a dance. Mrs Smith was from Warialda and the young fella from Delungra took her eye. Mr Smith was lucky to have lived long enough to get to that dance. At age nine, he was run over by a buggy and his arm was hanging by an artery, injured so badly he was never able to become a shearer as he had dreamed.
The couple have lived most of their married life in Delungra before moving to Inverell.
Mrs Smith remembers Lyndsay driving his truck to get a district nurse when one of the children, Melville was sick. He was just a babe in arms and he was limp.
The nurse was so worried, she ran to the house – and beat the truck.
